Crain’s Chicago Business for Personal Injury Litigation Success
Burke Wise Morrissey Kaveny (BWMK) partner Elizabeth Kaveny, has been featured and quoted in two pieces appearing in the September 16, 2013 issue of Crain’s Chicago Business. In an overview of the City’s trial bar and its new generation of leading litigators in plaintiff representation, “The Next Corboys: Rising Stars of Chicago’s Personal Injury Bar,” Ms. Kaveny was singled out among established personal injury lawyers under the age of 50 for having an active trial practice, including five cases set for trial in the next 12 months. Citing a growing trend of plaintiff litigators to head to trial in the face of more stringent juror damage awards, Ms. Kaveny suggested that “defense attorneys are going to say, ‘Roll the dice’” in favor of taking more cases to court.
Ms. Kaveny was profiled and pictured in a companion piece, which noted her as “an exception to the general rule [that] … not many top personal injury attorneys are women.” The article listed her substantial recent successes on behalf of personal injury clients. These have included a $5.25 million settlement this Spring with south suburban Merrionette Park and two other defendants for a bystander critically injured in a 2008 police chase; a $10 million settlement in July with Oak Brook’s Advocate Health Care for a misdiagnosed vascular abnormality in the brain; and a $7 million jury verdict (raised to $8 million in a post-trial settlement) against the South Side’s Holy Cross Hospital related to the 2006 death of an asthmatic.
Ms. Kaveny during her professional career has obtained numerous verdicts and settlements of plaintiff personal injury and professional malpractice actions, each in excess of $1 million and some at more than $10 million. In the peer-selected Illinois Leading Lawyers Network, she has been named one of the state’s Top 10 women litigators and Top 10 women personal injury lawyers. A founding name partner of her own firm after just 10 years in practice, she joined Burke Wise Morrissey Kaveny as a named partner in 2010.
